Choosing a Doula
(Dandelion photo by LeCron Photography)
Before hiring a doula, I recommend that you interview a few to get a feel for your options and to find the one with whom you really "click". There are many lists of questions to be found on the internet for interviewing doulas but the MOST important factor is your level of comfort and trust in the doula's presence. You will be sharing a very special, vulnerable, and intimate time with this person, after all.
Please call to set up an interview with me to see if I am a good fit as a member of your birth team.
If you do choose to hire me, the following is included in my service:
-Prenatal visits to get to know each other, to discuss your birth preferences, and to discern what resources you might need to be an active and informed health care/birth care consumer, etc
-Phone and email support for your questions or concerns about your pregnancy, birth, or my services
-My presence during your labor (from which stage to be decided together at our meetings), birth, and postpartum until you are ready for time alone to bond with baby and family
-My experience as a breastfeeding mother and trained La Leche League leader to help you get feeding off to a good start
-Continuing weekly postpartum check-ins for up to 6 months at the New Mamas group for support regarding such issues as feeding, baby care, and your physical and emotional health; and referrals to other community resources as needed
My job as your doula is to support you (and your partner) in whatever way you choose. It is not my job to make medical decisions for you or to tell you what kind of birth is best for you, but rather to help you discover the tools to explore these questions for yourself. I will advocate for you and partner with your birth team to help you work towards the birth YOU choose.
My rate for doula services is $900. Because I feel strongly that every pregnant person who wants a doula should have one, I am willing to talk about bartering and other payment plans. I work with families within the Louisville and Southern Indiana areas.
I strongly recommend that all of my clients attend a full series independent childbirth class. It will strengthen the doula/client relationship and provide us with a shared body of knowledge if a client attends my Prepared for Birth class series. Though not required, it does improve the experience. Think of it as an opportunity for 6 extra prenatal visits with me!

"Having Jenny Claire as our doula was one of the absolute best decisions we made in terms of planning our birth. She has a huge wealth of knowledge and experience, and offered a great deal of educational and emotional support. She is laid back, compassionate, easy to talk to, in addition to having the courage to tell it like it is and advocate for you when you need it most. During my pregnancy, I had some issues with an anxiety disorder, and she was there for me 100% - I felt like I could tell her anything - and she could direct me to the appropriate resources for getting the help I needed. During our labor, she was our rock. She continually reassured me that my body was doing exactly what it was meant to do, and that truly helped me let go and allow for the process of childbirth to take over, just as Mother Nature intended. Both my husband and I are eternally grateful for her. We had a beautiful birth, and I believe it was greatly due to having her along with us in our journey. Any woman and mother (and father, for that matter) is truly blessed to have her by their side."

"I was initially skeptical of the need for a doula at all, as I suspect many men are. But it didn't take long for me to realize that having a doula is as much if not more a benefit for the partner as it is for the mother. I was anxious, afraid I wouldn't know what to do or wouldn't be able to offer the help my wife needed. After one meeting with Jenny Claire, I felt so much better...I would have help, and help I could trust. Jenny's confidence before, during, and after the birth was incredibly reassuring, and as the labor continued I began to appreciate that more and more. If it weren't for her, we would have either been laboring alone or with an understandably less calm family member. In short, a doula is a must, and Jenny Claire's services are worth their weight in gold. There is no doubt in my mind that I want her there for the births of any children we have in the future!"
